Ditch the Detox
What are you intentionally engaging in?
Holistic living isn't just a trend; it's an ancient and sacred way of life that embraces the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. It's not just about restriction and removal, limits and boundaries; it's about what you choose and allow yourself to engage in, enjoy, and partake of, too.
We need to detox from the idea that holistic living is some kind of cardboard existence with no flavour, fun, or variety.
At the core of holistic living lies mindfulness—a practice that invites us to be fully present in each moment. Mindfulness and meditation aren't about being still or silent; it's the practice of being able to sit with your thoughts and your inner world no matter what is happening, and no matter how fidgety, adrenaline-filled, monkey-brained you might be. The point isn't stillness or quietness; it's presence and attention. Think of it as tuning into the rhythm of life, paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a pioneer in mindfulness meditation, describes it as
"knowing what you are doing while you are doing it."
It's about bringing awareness to our actions and choices, which, in my observation and experience, we're not always doing. How many times have you said to yourself or others, "I didn't even know what I was doing while I was doing it," or "I don't know why I did that or how I got here."
Another pillar of holistic living is compassion—starting with ourselves. The Dalai Lama reminds us that:
"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive."
When we practise self-compassion, we create a nurturing space for growth and healing. This is a huge part of detoxing from practices and ideas that damage our bodies, hearts, and souls. It's about treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, especially during challenging times, creating a nurturing space to find ourselves.
Have you ever paused to marvel at the intricate web that connects all living beings? Haha, I know, I know how that sounds... but honestly, we are held within a magnanimous web of an ecosystem that spans the entire universe. We all need each other, and everything and everyone needs us - it's a healthy interconnectedness and dependence that keeps the relationship of life alive in and between us all.
Holistic living acknowledges our interconnectedness with each other and the natural world. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson beautifully expresses this sentiment: "We are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically."
This awareness fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship for our planet and all its inhabitants - of which we, individually, are a vital part.
Incorporating these spiritual foundations into our daily lives enriches our journey towards holistic well-being. It's not just about checking off a list of practices, keeping to a strict diet of food or religion or medicine or ideology, but embodying a mindset that honours our interconnected nature and promotes harmony in all aspects of life, even as our lives change and morph with age and the seasons. By practising mindfulness, cultivating compassion, and embracing our unity with others, we create a foundation for genuine happiness and fulfilment. We actively detox from damaging ideas of success and achievement equating to our value and worth.
What are you intentionally engaging in? Detoxing isn't just about abstaining from certain ways and ideas and people and things, it's about intentionally adding in life-affirming engagements with certain ways and ideas and people and things, to enrich our health and experience.
What could you engage in today to foster that in your life?
REMEMBER: "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive." — Dalai Lama.
